The speculation about The Game Awards has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable with a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
